When Ogre started its development as a health resort, sport and active leisure were important throughout all seasons. Sports grounds for javelin and discus throwing, shot putting, long jumping as well as tennis courts were made. People developed their skiing skills on the tracks in the Blue Hills, the Kentes hill and other places.

Today sport plays an important role among all inhabitants of Ogre Municipality. Its resources and created infrastructure (sports halls, stadiums and sports grounds, swimming pool, lighted track of cross-country skiing, skatepark, etc.) are being used not only by the local residents, but also by people of neighbouring municipalities.
Ogre Basketball School was opened in 1983. Children start training at the age of 7 to reach the highest level of basketball excellence.
Ogre Sports Centre, founded in 1992, is the coordinator of the sports life in the Municipality. It has licensed programmes in five types of sports: handball, weightlifting, track-and-field athletics, football and orienteering. The Sports Centre operates two sports halls and a stadium.
Summer sports festivals, winter sports games, long-distance running competitions as well as lot of other activities organised by the Sports Centre have become a lasting tradition in Ogre Municipality.
